Shimla — More Than Just India's Most Famous Hill Station
Every year, millions of Indian and international tourists visit Shimla. Most tick off the same list — Mall Road, Kufri, and the Toy Train. But Shimla has so much more to offer. This guide covers 10 truly worthwhile experiences, whether this is your first visit or your fifth.
1. Walk the Entire Length of Mall Road
Shimla's car-free Mall Road is 1.5 km of colonial charm — Victorian buildings, cafes, local handicraft shops, and the best people-watching in all of Himachal Pradesh. Visit in the evening for the most vibrant atmosphere.
2. Ride the UNESCO Kalka–Shimla Toy Train
The narrow-gauge Kalka–Shimla Railway (built in 1903) passes through 102 tunnels and across 800+ bridges. Book the Shivalik Deluxe Express for the best views. The 96 km journey takes 5 hours — pure magic.
3. Hike to Jakhu Hill (2,455 m)
The 2.5 km trail from Mall Road to Jakhu Temple is a highlight of any Shimla trip. The ancient Hanuman temple at the summit offers 360-degree views of the Himalayas on clear days. Watch out for the resident monkeys!
4. Day Trip to Kufri
16 km from Shimla, Kufri is a ski resort in winter and an adventure hub in summer. Activities include horse riding, zip-lining, yak rides, and hiking. Hatu Peak trek nearby offers stunning views at 3,400 m.
5. Visit Chail — World's Highest Cricket Ground
45 km from Shimla, Chail is a quiet, less-touristy hill town built by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. The cricket ground at 2,444 m elevation is a unique sight. Chail Palace is now a heritage hotel.
6. Explore the Old Viceregal Lodge
Now the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), this 1888 Elizabethan-style mansion served as the summer residence of British Viceroys. Guided tours reveal fascinating colonial history. Entry ₹50.
7. Taste Authentic Himachali Cuisine
Shimla's food scene goes beyond Maggi noodles. Try Sidu (fermented wheat bread with ghee), Chha Gosht (lamb curry), Babru (black bean stuffed puri), and the famous Himachali Dham (festive thali).
8. Shopping at Lakkar Bazaar
Shimla's Lakkar Bazaar is famous for wooden handicrafts — hand-carved walking sticks, chess sets, kitchen items, and miniature temples. Prices are reasonable and bargaining is expected.
9. Day Trip to Naldehra Golf Course
22 km from Shimla, Naldehra has India's oldest golf course, established in 1905 by Lord Curzon. Non-golfers can take a pony ride around the course through dense cedar forests.
10. Watch the Sunset from the Ridge
The Ridge — Shimla's open plaza — faces west and offers one of the most beautiful sunsets in all of North India. The silhouette of Christ Church against an orange sky is one of those moments you never forget.
